9846-8A "Boom or Bust" What sayeth the membership
They came as a discount,my first contact with this model:2 altec 9846-8A monitors, formerly used as L/R surrounds in a cinema (point sources) sound distorted; both LF's defective due to outer cone suspension failures. I just think about comparing them with my 620A/604-8K. That's not going to happen for some time.Meanwhile I shall start doing some research on them.

The most significant difference will be in sensitivity, the 9846's are MUCH less sensitive.
The next most significant difference is in midrange "forwardness". 604's in general tend to be fairly midrange forward, while the 9846 is anything but.
Clean and ample soild state power will give you authoritative bass down through the lowest octave, a trick very few vintage Altecs can pull off.
At the end of the day you're comparing two very different loudspeaker systems that each have different positive attributes that make them both desirable.
Just my .02..............

Correct. Also has a ribbed cone that looks amazingly similar to a JBL cone.
